How To Wash A Synthetic Wig

Step By Step Guide To Washing Your Synthetic Wig

It is essential to care for your synthetic wig to preserve it’s longevity and with gentle brushing and styling and careful storage, you really can get multiple wears from your favourite hair piece with it looking like new. Washing and conditioning your wig is an ideal way to remove any unnatural shine, particularly in regards light or bright coloured designs and will be required after 3-8 outings of your new hair.

Our step by step guide requires no skill or specialist equipment just patience and a gentle hand!

It may be tempting to wash your wig with the same products as your natural hair. Your favourite shampoo and conditioner are ideal but remember that your wig is made from synthetic materials, closely resembling a soft fabric. You will therefore need a small amount of fabric conditioner and treat the hair much more carefully than you would your own to achieve the best and least damaging results.

Only wash your wig when you feel it is absolutely needed and give yourself plenty of time. Ideally you will want to leave it to dry overnight. Washing your wig too frequently will adversely affect the fibres and shorten it’s life span.

Step By Step Guide To Washing A Wig

  1. MIX IT UP: First up, you need to prepare your magical concoction. Using 10 pence piece sizes add 3 X Shampoo (shampoo designed specifically for dry hair is great for wigs as it will moisture and nourish the hair) 3 X Conditioner and 2 X Fabric Conditioner into your empty spray bottle. Top it right up with water and give it a swirl ensuring a nice diluted potion. If needed detangle your wig first using a wide tooth comb or brush. This paddle brush from Toni & Guy is ideal.
  2. GET SPRITZING: Depending on the length of your wig, you can either hold it up or place it on a wig stand / door knob / can of hair spray / boyfriend’s head and simply coat all the hair as evenly as possible with your spritzing bottle.
  3. LET IT FLOW: No need for any magic words or wizard spells, allow the mixture to penetrate the hair fibres for a few minutes and prepare for the next step by filling a clean basin with lukewarm water. Hotter water is fine to use on heat resistant wigs but will relax the wig style slightly if used on kanekalon and other fibres that are not fully heat resistant.

Step 1: When your wig arrives, it is super important to remove from the packaging and shake it out. Your wig has been packed flat and in transit for hours or sometimes days. Have you seen those exposé documentaries? Your package has more than likely been thrown, tossed, squeezed, folded, squashed and more by stressed and hungover delivery drivers. 🙁

Step 2: Blow it out! Choose a cool setting on your hair dryer and blitz your wig. This separates all of the fibres which in turn adds texture and reduces shine.
